With the Lake Still Low, Smith Mountain Lake's Holiday Season Runs Through Bridgewater

The Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce describes the November Lighted Boat Parade as decorated boats cruising "up the main channel from Virginia Dare Marina to Bridgewater Plaza and back." This year that route isn't on the calendar. The Smith Mountain Lake Insiders' Guide lists the 2026 parade as canceled because of low water levels.

Smith Mountain Lake is heading into winter several feet below where it normally sits. The holiday traditions that still run on the water are clustered at the one spot where the water stays deep: Bridgewater. Everything else this season happens on land.

The Number on the Dam Page

Appalachian Power runs the Smith Mountain Project and lists full pond at 795 feet. The normal operating range is 793 to 795 feet. In early November, its lake level page showed Smith Mountain Lake at 790.82 feet, a little more than 4 feet below full pond and nearly 2.2 feet under the bottom of the normal range. An independent hourly tracker that pulls from AEP recorded 790.86 feet and "steady" on the morning of November 1, 2026.

Here is how the year got there:

Date in 2026 Smith Mountain Lake level Reported by
May 19 More than 5 feet below full pond, the lowest since 2007 WFXR
September 17 Nearly 6 feet below full pond WSET
October 13 About 790.75 feet after a weekend rain added roughly 1.5 feet WSET
Early November 790.82 feet Appalachian Power

So the October rain bump has held, and since then the lake has crept up only about a tenth of a foot. Leesville Lake downstream is lower still. It sat at 603.43 feet against a 613-foot full pond, and Appalachian Power notes that each foot of change at Smith Mountain equals about 6.5 feet at Leesville.

The cause is a long dry stretch, and the rules governing the dams are built for that. A September 2026 Appalachian Power presentation, posted by the Smith Mountain Lake Association, puts year-to-date rainfall about 9 inches below normal as of September 1. It says the U.S. Drought Monitor showed drought across all of Bedford, Campbell and Pittsylvania counties and more than 80% of Franklin County. Under the FERC-approved drought plan, the lake hit Trigger Point 1 on April 27 and Trigger Point 2 on May 11, and Trigger 3 took effect July 22 through a variance. The presentation says operations stay under that variance "until lake levels rise and predictive models indicate stable inflows," and that the company hasn't released more than its license minimum since summer 2025, apart from legally required capacity tests. Appalachian Power said in May that the main driver of recovery is sustained rain across the watershed, not a target lake elevation.

Why a Foot and a Half Changed So Much

The October rise looks small on the chart. Roy Enslow, manager at Goodhue Boat Company, described the difference to WSET this way: "a foot and a half is the difference between 40% of people not being able to get their boats out to 20%." He also pointed at a stretch of shoreline and said, "If you would've come here last week, that would've all been bare."

That rain lifted the lake to just above an important line. In a July 2 ramp update, the Insiders' Guide listed Anthony Ford, Hardy Ford and Penhook public launches as not usable below 790 feet. It listed Hales Ford, Oak Grove, Scruggs and the Smith Mountain Lake State Park ramp as usable only with limits or caution. At 790.82 feet, the lake now sits less than a foot above that threshold.

The rising water also stirs up what the summer left behind. Randy Stow, a captain with Sea Tow, told WSET, "We get a lot of debris on the shore and when that water comes up some of that debris comes off into the lake." Enslow's warning was shorter: "It's still low, and people still have to use caution; don't get overconfident."

What the Marine Crews Saw After Dark

A parade of lit boats on the main channel is a nighttime event, and the low water has made the lake at night a different place. Todd Ohlerich, chief of Smith Mountain Lake Marine Fire and Rescue, told WSET in September that the number of calls barely changed this summer but the kind of call did. Groundings in shallow areas, many of them at night, replaced some of the usual collisions between boats.

"In years past a boat accident would've been between two boats, and this year we had them running aground instead."

He also pointed to the electronics. "Most GPS and charts on their boats are not adapted to the lake level," Ohlerich said, adding that looking down at a screen costs a boater their night vision.

Where the Water Is Still Deep Enough for Santa

Bridgewater is the exception on this year's calendar. In July, while some lake customers couldn't get boats back to their own docks because of shallow water or dock cables that were too short, WFXR reported that Bridgewater Marina had deep water and accessible docks.

So the one holiday arrival by water on this year's schedule is still on. The chamber's Santa Around Bridgewater Plaza page sets it for Saturday, November 28, 2026. Santa arrives by boat at Bridgewater Marina at 11 a.m., then hears wish lists and poses for photos at the Coffee House until 1 p.m. The day also includes the Elf on the Shelf contest and Small Business Saturday specials around the plaza.

The plaza has a new stop since summer. Red Jak's Lounge, which proprietor Pam Gabriel calls a "modern-day speakeasy," opened October 5 on the rear lower level of Bridgewater Plaza, beneath Cancun restaurant. Gabriel told the Smith Mountain Eagle, "We offer vegan, vegetarian, Alpha-Gal-approved and Gluten-free foods." The menu runs from oysters on the half shell, raw or grilled, to 13 meat-based and plant-based sandwiches. For a family coming off the Santa photo line, that's a lunch option at the same plaza.

The Rest of the Season Moves Ashore

Beyond Bridgewater, the lake area's holiday calendar runs through the nearby towns:

  1. November 23 through January 3, 2027: Bedford Festival of Trees at the Bedford Area Welcome Center. The 2026 theme is "250 Years of Holiday Traditions," per the Smith Mountain Eagle.
  2. November 28: Santa Around Bridgewater Plaza, with the 11 a.m. boat arrival at Bridgewater Marina.
  3. December 5: Bedford Christmas Parade in downtown Bedford, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tree-lighting activities start at 3 p.m., according to Destination Bedford.
  4. December 5: Come Home to a Franklin County Christmas in downtown Rocky Mount, which the chamber describes as a Christmas parade, tree lighting, dancing, music and shopping.

The Bedford parade and the Rocky Mount event fall on the same Saturday, which means choosing between the Bedford County side and the Franklin County side of the lake that day.

One project on the Franklin County side is aimed at this exact gap in the off-season. Jeanna and Christopher Williams are developing The Black Angus Company in the former Sunken City Brewery building at 40 Brewery Drive in Hardy. They describe it to WSLS as a Nashville-inspired mix of a full-service restaurant and bar, a billiards lounge, a western-themed retail boutique and space for local music and events. The couple said they want it to stay busy year-round because so many lake businesses are seasonal. They are partnering with Circle J Ranch and working with Wright Brothers Beef on a farm-to-table menu. They are targeting Memorial Day weekend 2027 to open, so it won't be part of this winter.

Appalachian Power posts the current Smith Mountain Lake level on its lake level page. In early November it read 790.82 feet, against a full pond of 795.
